[ REPUBLIC ACT NO. 355, June 04, 1949 ]

AN ACT TO INCREASE THE SALARIES OF CERTAIN OFFICIALS OF THE CITY OF BASILAN, AMENDING FOR THIS PURPOSE SECTIONS SIX, SEVENTEEN, THIRTY-FIVE AND THIRTY-SIX OF REPUBLIC ACT NUMBERED TWO HUNDRED EIGHTY-EIGHT.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Philippines in Congress assembled:

Section 1. Section six of Republic Act Numbered Two hundred eighty-eight is amended to read as follows:

"Section 6. Appointment and compensation. —   The City Basilan shall have a mayor who shall be its chief executive who shall reside therein.    He shall be appointed by the President of the Philippines, with the consent of the Commission on Appointments, and shall hold office at the pleasure of the President.

"The mayor shall receive a salary of not to exceed five thousand pesos per annum, the amount to be fixed by the council on the basis of the income of the city."

Section 2. The third paragraph of section seventeen of the same Act is amended to read as follows:

"Section 17. Appointment and removal of officers and employees—Compensation. —    "The engineer of the city shall receive a compensation not to exceed three thousand six hundred pesos a year; the city treasurer-assessor, a compensation not to exceed three thousand six hundred pesos a year; the city attorney, a compensation not to exceed thirty-six hundred pesos year; the chief of police, a compensation not to exceed three thousand pesos a year; the assistant chief of polio a compensation not to exceed eighteen hundred pesos year: Provided, however, That the city council shall determine and fix by ordinance the compensation of such officers and the salaries of other officers and employees of city."

Section 3. Sections thirty-five and thirty-six of the same Act are amended to read as follows:

"Section 35. Auditor General's Office. — The Auditor general shall receive and audit all accounts of the cit accordance with the provisions of law relating to Government's accounts and accounting.

"Until the council shall provide otherwise, the of the City of Zamboanga shall be "ex-officio" auditor the City of Basilan, with an additional compensation to be paid by the City of Basilan, in the sum of one thousand pesos per annum.”

Section 36. The Bureau of Public Schools. — The Director of Public Schools shall exercise the same jurisdiction and powers in the city as elsewhere in the Philippines, and until the council shall provide otherwise, the division superintendent of schools for the city of Zamboanga shall be ex-officio superintendent of schools for the city of Basilan, in the sum of one thousand pesos per annum. Said superintendent shall have the same powers in respect to the establishment of schools, as are conferred by law on the provincial boards of municipal councils of regularly organized provinces and municipalities.”

Section 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
