DECLARING SEPTEMBER 20 OF EVERY YEAR AS “JOSEFA LLANES ESCODA DAY”

IN THE PROVINCE OF ILOCOS NORTE

WHEREAS, the late Josefa Llanes Escoda, the distinguished daughter of Dingras, Ilocos Norte, rose from child leader to outstanding civic and social worker, successful executive, eminent humanitarian, ambassadress of goodwill, and organizer notably of the National Federation of Women of the Philippines and the Girls Scouts of the Philippines;

WHEREAS, she was killed in Fort Santiago by the Japanese during the World War II for her underground activities and invaluable assistance given to war prisoners and allied internees in military and concentration camps, a gallant lady and outstanding patriot to the end; and

WHEREAS, our nation should accord proper honors to and memorialize this great wartime heroine worthy of emulation especially by our Filipino womanhood;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, CORAZON C. AQUINO, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare September 20 of every year as “JOSEFA LLANES ESCODA DAY” in the Province of Ilocos Norte. The day, however, shall be a regular working and school day.
