[ Proclamation No. 715, October 27, 1960 ]

DECLARING 1961 AS JOSE RIZAL YEAR WITH SLOGAN “VISIT THE PHILIPPINES—SEE THE ORIENT”

WHEREAS, next year will mark the first centenary of the birth of Dr. Jose Rizal, the nation’s foremost hero and patriot;

WHEREAS, the significance of the event demands that the year be dedicated to the study of his works and to the mission of inspiring our people to live the Rizal way;

WHEREAS, Proclamation No. 648 dated February 17, 1960, declared 1961 as “Visit the Philippines—See the Orient Year” so as to give greater impetus to the development of international tourism;

WHEREAS, said proclamation supplements and broadens the meaning of the Rizal centenary by making its scope international in character and importance;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Carlos P. Garcia, President of the Philippines, do hereby declare 1961 as JOSE RIZAL YEAR and order the adoption of “Visit the Philippines—See the Orient” as the year’s slogan. For this purpose, I invite peoples of the West to come and enjoy the beauty and enchantment of the East and if possible share with us the joy of honoring Dr. Jose Rizal, who has attained through his deeds and writings international stature and fame.

I call upon all government officials and all the people of the Philippines as individuals, groups, societies, and associations to observe the RIZAL YEAR in a manner commensurate with the honor, dignity, and traditional hospitality of our country.1aшphi1

Proclamation No. 648, dated February 17, 1960, is hereby modified accordingly.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the Republic of the Philippines to be affixed.

Done in the City of Manila, this 27th day of October, in the year of Our Lord, nineteen hundred and sixty, and of the Independence of the Philippines, the fifteenth.
