[ Memorandum Order No. 203, November 24, 1988 ]

ALLOWING THE IMPORTATION OF SECOND-HAND CARS FOR TAXI USE UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS

WHEREAS, in a series of consultative meetings conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry with the taxi operators, the operators requested assistance for the immediate replacement of their dilapidated units and expansion of their existing ones to service the riding public;

WHEREAS, the taxi operators requested for an immediate relief to their aforesaid problems through the importation of second-hand roadworthy vehicles to be used as taxi units;

WHEREAS, the local car assemblers under the Car Development Program are just starting their operations and therefore, can not immediately supply the taxi operators’ requirements;

IN VIEW THEREOF, and in consideration of the national interest and public welfare and safety, the importation of second-hand vehicles for use exclusively as taxi units is hereby allowed up to December 31, 1989, in accordance with the guidelines and procedures to be prepared jointly by the Department of Transportation and Communications, and the Department of Trade and Industry.

The Department of Transportation and Communications and the Department of Trade and Industry are hereby directed to prepare the guidelines and procedure for the importation authorized under this Memorandum Order.1aшphi1

The importation authorized under this Memorandum Order shall be an exception to Memorandum Order No. 136, Series of 1987.

This Memorandum Order shall take effect immediately.
